Gazprom and Naftogaz argued about the train
Naftogaz of Ukraine believes that there is still time to sign a new gas contract with Gazprom that complies with EU legislation, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Executive Director of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine Yuriy Vitrenko wrote about this on Facebook today.
“For “the train to have already left”, it needs to be there earlier. In our case, Gazprom never agreed to conclude a contract for transit through Ukraine according to European rules,” Vitrenko wrote, commenting on the statement of Gazprom head Alexei Miller that “Ukraine until the end of the year, until the end of the current transit contract will not be able to sign a new transit contract under EU law.”
In particular, according to Vitrenko, it is necessary to prepare the branches of the gas transport operator (unbundling) from January 1, 2020. This can be done if you implement Naftogaz’s plan according to the ISO model. It is also possible to have time to amend the Regulator Act, appoint members of the regulator, and implement European network codes.
“Perhaps Mr. Miller meant that we will continue to be prevented from implementing European rules. There really is such a risk. But there is hope that the new parliament and the new government will do everything necessary to prevent Gazprom and Putin from thus justifying in the eyes of Europeans the completion of the construction of Nord Stream 2 and the cessation of transit through Ukraine,” he added.
Earlier today, Gazprom announced its readiness to extend the existing gas transit contract with Ukraine.
