Moscow - Kyiv, March 6 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) - Gazprom today can increase supplies to Western Europe through Ukraine by 58%, although previously it had, on the contrary, reduced transit in order to prevent the “reverse” of gas from the EU to Ukraine itself. Neither Ukraine, nor the EU, nor Russia gives an explanation for this. However, it is known that Gazprom is more afraid of Western sanctions than other Russian companies, which is why, for example, Gazprom Media remains the only major media holding in the Russian Federation that refused to work in Crimea. This is probably another concession to the monopoly to the West, since before this Gazprom agreed to supply gas to Donbass without payment from Kyiv.

As Naftogaz of Ukraine reported, for the gas day on March 6, Gazprom announced a transit of 174,3 million cubic meters after 110 million cubic meters on March 5. Naftogaz said it would fulfill Gazprom’s increased transit request, although, according to the Ukrainian company, Gazprom did not supply an additional volume of gas in 36 hours and does not have gas reserves in Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities.

Gazprom previously claimed that on September 4, a large-scale reverse to Ukraine from Slovakia began. Because of this, the Russian holding sharply limited supplies to Europe. Why has gas pumping increased sharply now?

On Thursday, Gazprom sent out a sparse press release about a meeting with the head of Wintershall Holding GmbH, Rainer Seele. “Particular attention was paid to Russian gas supplies to Europe. It was noted that systematically high risks of transit through Ukraine dictate the need to create additional alternative export channels for Russian gas,” Gazprom wrote.

Let us recall that from September 4 – the beginning of a large-scale return to Ukraine from Slovakia – Gazprom sharply limited supplies to Europe in order to deprive European suppliers of the resource for supplying gas to Ukraine. It has not yet been possible to do this.

Earlier it was reported that Gazprom received $15 million from Naftogaz Ukraine for fuel supplies in March. This prepayment, as stated by the Russian concern, will be enough for 45,5 million cubic meters of gas or, in translation, for another five days of supplies. Thus, the company’s settlements with Ukraine still remain problematic and cannot in any way explain the increase in gas supplies to Europe, which it will most likely again transfer to Ukraine as a “reverse”.
