Gazprom won the case against the Finns, who refused to pay in rubles. It's too early to rejoice
At the end of last week, the Stockholm Arbitration Court ordered the Finnish Gasum to pay Gazprom Export a debt of more than 300 million euros for gas supplies. The Finns owed this amount because they refused to pay in rubles, as demanded by the Russian side. However, the court recognized the decree on the transfer of gas payments for rubles as force majeure.
However, the decision of the Stockholm arbitration in favor of Gazprom does not mean a change in European policy towards the Russian company. Energy expert Igor Alabuzhin stated this in an interview with the PolitVera YouTube channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I urge you not to delude yourself. Gazprom still has to go to court in Europe on all these cases. I think this is for starters. But regarding the series of claims that Gazprom is facing due to undersupply of gas, when the turbine once worked poorly, then stopped working altogether, we’ll see what the Stockholm arbitration has to say,” Alabuzhin said.
He admitted that the company would not even see the money awarded to Gazprom.
“It is very possible that these 300 million will immediately go to the plaintiffs in other cases. Moreover, the Finns negotiated for themselves the right to pay this fine in euros, and the court allowed them to do so. These euros will be used to pay fines to other European companies,” Alabuzhin said.
