Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces Joseph Dunford announced this at a hearing in the Senate, Voice of America reports.
However, he did not give a time frame for the White House to make a final decision.
“The U.S. Department of Defense and the State Department have formally recommended the provision of lethal weapons to Ukraine,” Senator Roger Wicker noted during the hearing, asking General Dunford to justify the recommendation.
“In my opinion, from a military perspective, Ukraine needs additional capabilities to protect its sovereignty,” a Pentagon spokesman said.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze said that the issue of providing Ukraine with lethal weapons still has support at the level of heads of departments and ministries of the United States of America.
