Recently released copies of President Yanukovych’s appeals dated February 2014 to the guarantors of the implementation of the agreement on the peaceful settlement of the political crisis (the foreign ministers of Poland, France and Germany) break the line of accusing the former leader of Ukraine of high treason, the online publication “Apostrophe” reports, citing its source in the Prosecutor General's Office.

In his appeals to the European guarantors, Yanukovych asks them to provide assistance in establishing constitutional order in Ukraine through military or police peacekeeping missions.

As the publication’s source in the GPU noted, these documents neutralize a significant part of the evidence that Yanukovych initially and consciously contributed to Putin’s aggressive plans to seize part of the territories of Ukraine.

“By the way, many experienced employees warned us about such a development of events around this case of treason at internal meetings, but then the task was to obtain at least the first indictment against Yanukovych in all these years, since from a political point of view the situation already really looked strange,” the publication’s interlocutor said.

According to him, from the very beginning, there were two groups of opinions in the prosecutor’s office - some convinced that at least one already begun case against the fugitive president needed to be completed, and the most logical in this regard was the charge, first of all, in the Berkut case.

“But there was a team of employees who launched the treason process, convincing us all that the Berkut case would not end very soon, while Yanukovych’s letter to Putin is ideal evidence, thanks to which we will receive at least the first indictment against Yanukovych, which will take no more than 2-3 months. As a result, as we see, the officials who wanted to distinguish themselves in front of the leadership again led everyone into a very unpleasant situation, from which the task is now to look for a way out,” the source complained.
