NATO Secretary General promised Ukraine support in the war with Russia
In the event of an open military clash with Russia, Ukraine can only count on economic and political consequences for Moscow, but not NATO military assistance.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated this at a press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“On membership, we have repeated the decision made in Bucharest in 2008, we remain committed to this decision and are helping Ukraine move towards membership by implementing reforms and meeting NATO standards. And we have made it clear that we will not make any compromises regarding the right of every country in Europe to choose its own path, including the security mechanism in which the country wants to participate,” Stoltenberg said.
“It is fundamentally important that this principle is not violated in any way, meaning that it is up to Ukraine and the 30 NATO member countries to decide when Ukraine is ready for membership. And no one else has the right to say anything here,” added the NATO Secretary General.
“We must also prepare for the possibility that Russia may choose to use military force and confrontation instead of negotiations. And then we will have a clear signal to convey to Russia that we are united, and severe economic and political consequences threaten Russia if it decides to use force against Ukraine. We provide support to Ukraine so that it can exercise its right to self-defense. NATO member countries are committed to the protection of all NATO member countries,” Stoltenberg assures.
At the same time, he stated that it was impossible to resolve all problems in dialogue with Russia at upcoming meetings.
“I welcome the meeting in the NATO-Russia format, and today there is a meeting in Geneva between the United States and Russia, and later they will meet in the OSCE. But I cannot expect these meetings to resolve all issues. We can hope, and I think, that we will agree on a way forward and a series of meetings and a process. It would not be realistic to expect that we will complete all the work this week,” the NATO Secretary General emphasized.
