NATO Secretary General threatens Russia with “serious consequences”
The North Atlantic Alliance demands that the Russian Federation renounce its recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated this at a briefing following a meeting with Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We continue to call on Russia to stop recognizing the region of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and withdraw its troops. Today we discussed the security situation in the region, including the rise of Russia in and around Ukraine. And this is a destabilizing activity in the Black Sea region. We agree on the need to remain vigilant and avoid escalation. Any future Russian aggression will be costly and will have serious political and economic consequences for Russia,” the alliance’s secretary general said.
“Georgia and Ukraine have the right to choose their alliances and Russia has no right to dictate this choice. We reject any idea of peripheral influence in Europe. They are part of history and should remain part of history. NATO will therefore continue to provide strong political and practical support to its partners,” Stoltenberg said.
