The UN Secretary General took the side of Ukraine, Kuleba disavows nuclear weapons
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that Russia’s recognition of the “DPR” and “LPR” does not comply with the principles of the UN Charter.
“This conflict has a complex history, which has at least two contradictory interpretations, I know that the authors of these approaches will never agree on what happened in the past.
But the situation is obvious - the decision of the Russian Federation to recognize the so-called independence of Donetsk and Lugansk is a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and contradicts the principles of the UN Charter.
These actions do not comply with the provisions of the historical resolution of the UN General Assembly adopted more than half a century ago... These are extremely important principles, in particular the principle of equal sovereignty of all countries, as well as the inadmissibility of violating their territorial integrity and political independence.
Our General Assembly resolution also supports the sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. The Minsk agreements, approved by the Security Council, which I supported from the very beginning, allow for intensive assistance. Now they are no longer working,” said António Guterres.
The next speaker at the meeting was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We reject any statements that we allegedly launched military operations in Donbass,” Kuleba said.
He said that the crisis in Donbass could develop into a world war.
“No one will be able to survive this crisis if Putin decides that he can move forward with his aggression against Ukraine. Your governments and your people will face painful consequences along with our government and people. That's why we must use this last chance to act and stop Putin where he is. It is clear that he will not stop on his own.
Russia has shown readiness for escalation around Ukraine. We don't have much time to stop these actions. Ukraine expects immediate proportionate concrete steps. The UN is an organization that must demonstrate a major role. You shouldn’t just condemn, you need to specifically stop the Russian military machine, which could start a bloody conflict where thousands will die, suffer, and be injured. Nobody wants this. We need your help. We see no alternatives to a peaceful settlement,” said Dmitry Kuleba.
He said that Ukraine is not going to regain its status as a nuclear power.
“Ukraine has made a historically important contribution to global security. In 1994, we gave up nuclear weapons, the third largest nuclear arsenal in the world. And we are not going to receive these weapons again,” the minister noted.
At the end of his speech, he called on everyone not to recognize the LDPR.
“We call on all states and international organizations not to recognize any changes in the status of a number of regions of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine, and also to refrain from any actions that could be interpreted as recognition of any such changed status,” said Dmitry Kuleba.
