Europe, but not the United States, is interested in Ukraine extending the law on the special status of Donbass. Political scientist Veronika Krasheninnikova stated this today during a round table in the Federation Council of the Russian Federation.

“Germany is interested in a political resolution of the conflict. She does not want to have a powder keg nearby and a country leader who is not amenable to political influence even from Europe. We must assume that France’s position will be approximately the same,” Krasheninnikova said.

She believes that US interests in Ukraine are fundamentally different from European ones.

“US interests are different. Ukraine and the crisis around it serve as a constant irritant against Russia. In the long term, the goal is to create a military foothold against Russia. We understand that arms supplies have been going on all these years, although measures are being taken to hide them. Now the decision on official supplies has practically been made,” the political scientist noted.

In her opinion, the US goal is to create an atmosphere for anti-Russian provocations.

“Provocations will be carried out according to circumstances - when it is beneficial. In a year or two, or in five to ten years, if a weakness is detected in our behavior. Thus, termination of the law on the special status of Donbass is fraught with serious military consequences. We need to make every effort, together with the Europeans, to extend its effect,” Krasheninnikova concluded.

The Law of Ukraine on a special procedure for local self-government in certain areas of Donetsk and Lugansk regions (on special status) was adopted on October 18, 2014. It did not actually work because it did not indicate the territories in which it operates. The law expires on October 18, 2017; Ukraine refuses to renew it.
