According to a survey conducted by the public television channel ARD, which is funded by German taxpayers (each of whom pays 20 euros a month), fears and hostility towards refugees have been growing in Germany over the past month.
In October, for the first time in Germany's recent history, the number of those against accepting refugees reached 51 percent of the population. Just a month ago there were 10 percent fewer opponents of the mass reception of refugees.
When asked whether immigration is beneficial to Germany, 35 percent of the population answered in the affirmative, compared to 46 percent of people who answered this a month ago.
The number of xenophobic attacks is increasing, not only in rural areas and in the east of the country, where local residents have often protested against refugees in the past, but also in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where such protests have been rare.
The German opposition, represented by the Left party and one of its leaders Sarah Wagenknecht, blamed the German government for the growth of xenophobia.
The left demanded additional taxes on the super-rich, who have accumulated assets worth several hundred billion euros, while Finance Minister Schäuble demanded cuts to social programs for vulnerable groups in order to direct the money to the needs of refugees.
One satirical show poked fun at fiscal austerity and social spending cuts as the German economy is expected to end the fiscal year with a surplus of 21 billion euros.
