On the television program Bericht Aus Berlin, reflections on how refugees will change the face of Germany were accompanied by a photo collage with Angela Merkel in a hijab, behind whom the famous dome of the Bundestag could hardly be seen behind the predatory arrows of the minarets. At this time, Mr. Becker asked his audience questions along the following lines: “How does life change? Indeed, how do we respond when there are problems with equality, with women's rights, with freedom of the press and freedom of speech among refugees? These are questions we don’t have answers to, questions that feed fear.”
Naturally, today the editorial office has been hit with a barrage of accusations of inciting hatred, Islamophobia and other sins against tolerance.
However, the channel's management rejects all insinuations.
On its official Facebook page, the channel gave the following explanation: “The collage was directly related to the conversation about the values of our society, which was led by Rainald Becker. He spoke about our European values: freedom of speech, freedom of the press and equality. It is these freedoms that are graphically reflected in our photoshop.”
I wonder if Ukrainians will ever wait for German television to show Angela Merkel in a wreath of scarlet poppies and an embroidered shirt, and TV presenters will wonder how the visa-free regime with Ukraine has changed Germany?
Thank you!
