Germany begins campaigning in Kyiv: EU membership is not in the cards for Ukraine
For the first time in Kyiv, the West is beginning to finance the work of the Fund, which will not be engaged in promoting European integration, but, on the contrary, will explain the improbability of further expansion of the EU, especially after the events in Greece.
The new fund is being opened at the initiative of deputies from the Alternative for Germany party. The work of the new institution was announced at a conference in Kyiv by political scientist Kost Bondarenko.

He noted that today more and more voices are heard in Europe in support of stopping EU enlargement. Recent events in Greece are likely to freeze EU enlargement indefinitely, and today Ukraine is knocking on a tightly closed door. Political forces that consider themselves to be in the Eurosceptic camp are dynamically developing in Europe, and they are unlikely to be delighted with the intentions of new states to join the European Union - given the political and economic instability of the candidates.
Such activities will have a greater effect on the development of Ukraine and its subjectivity and sovereignty than the constant populist campaigns of Euro-optimists about Ukraine’s imminent membership in the EU, Bondarenko argues.
“This is an initiative of individual German politicians, in particular, deputies from the Alternative for Germany party,” explained Kost Bondarenko in an interview with a PolitNavigator correspondent. – Back in May and early June, when I was in Berlin, I had many interesting conversations with representatives of German political circles. They would like to create some kind of information center in Kyiv that would report on the real situation in the EU and would not engage in propaganda, but would tell Ukrainians honestly, clearly and openly about the situation in Europe and the possibilities of equal cooperation between Ukraine and the EU.”
In his opinion, cooperation with the EU must be pragmatic, honest, clear and open. “Everyone perfectly understands that Ukraine will not have any European integration in the near future. Moreover, the EU does not see any expansion in the near future, at least in the foreseeable future. Self-deception is counterproductive. It’s productive to help find those points where it is possible to cooperate in terms of business, technology exchange, etc., without any hope of institutional unification,” he said.
Not only representatives of the Alternative for Germany are interested in creating the fund, but also representatives of other political forces. “As far as I understand, the same idea is being nurtured by the German Social Democrats, especially the left wing, and other political forces, and not only in Germany. Europe understands that it is necessary to do something with Ukraine, which is its neighbor, but at the same time it cannot be given inflated promises, hopes, etc.,” said Kost Bondarenko.
It is not yet known who exactly will participate in the work of the fund and information center. According to Kostya Bondarenko, these will be foreign citizens who will also attract consultants from Ukraine. Creating the fund will take several months.
