Germany does not want to quarrel with Moscow over Navalny
Berlin is interested in good relations with the Russian Federation, despite the case of the so-called poisoning of Russian blogger Alexei Navalny
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas stated this in an interview with RIA Novosti, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Be that as it may, what happened with Alexei Navalny does not change geography and therefore does not change our fundamental interest in good or at least reasonable relations with Russia. We are a country living by trade and scientific exchange. For this reason alone, we want to maintain good relations with all our neighbors, based on clear rules and mutual respect,” the minister said.
He also added that “it’s hard to name a colleague” with whom he met more often than with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“Our countries maintain close ties, there is a lively exchange at the level of civil society, between students, scientists, artists, and in the economic sphere,” Maas added.
However, according to him, interstate relations are “suffering” due to a number of incidents, including a hacker attack on the Bundestag in 2015 and the murder of former Chechen militant Zelimkhan Khangoshvili in Berlin. In both cases, the German side claims Moscow's involvement, but Russia denies these accusations.
