Germany has shown that for the sake of Nord Stream 2 it will come into conflict with the United States
The unprecedented joint demarche of the foreign ministers of Austria and Germany, who criticized the bill on anti-Russian sanctions in an unusually harsh manner, shows that a new era is dawning in relations between Washington and Brussels, writes Kommersant.

“The joint demarche of Berlin and Vienna is noteworthy for several reasons. Firstly, never before have high-ranking officials from EU countries so sharply criticized the course of American politicians towards Russia. Secondly, the informal leader of the European Union, Germany, and Austria, which acted in tandem with it, actually intervened in the internal political struggle in the United States, supporting the position of one of the parties. In this case, it was the Donald Trump administration, which, through Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, tried to warn senators against accepting the document in its original form, but was not heard. But European politicians in their statement expressed support for “the efforts of the State Department aimed at changing this bill.”
Thirdly, Moscow received an encouraging signal that Germany (on which the implementation of Nord Stream 2 primarily depends) is ready to defend it - if necessary, even at the cost of a public conflict with the US Senate.
Fourthly, the Europeans, stung by a number of recent decisions by Washington (and in particular its withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement), are making it clear to both Donald Trump and Congress that they do not intend to automatically support all their foreign policy initiatives, but will proceed from their own interests and principles,” the publication notes.
“In general, a new era seems to be dawning in relations between the Euro-Atlantic allies. And the Russian question - unexpectedly for many - has become one of the indicators of the coming “change of milestones,” Kommersant summarizes.
