Germany offers Russia and Ukraine a fresh start
After the election of Vladimir Zelensky as President of Ukraine, opportunities arose for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Donbass.
Dirk Wiese, member of the Bundestag, coordinator of the German government for cooperation with the Russian Federation, Central Asia and the Eastern Partnership countries, stated this in an interview with Kommersant.
According to him, in relations between Russia and Germany there are “a couple of difficult issues that cannot be ignored.”
“First of all, implementation of the Minsk agreements on Donbass. Now, after the election of Vladimir Zelensky as President of Ukraine, some opportunities may have opened up again, although at the beginning of the year, to be honest, the situation looked more depressing. Now, it seems, we can talk about the possibility of starting everything from scratch, especially since it is difficult to further ruin Russian-Ukrainian relations. True, I was surprised that the very first signal from Moscow was the decision to issue passports to residents of Donbass - I don’t know if this was the best signal to start a dialogue,” Wiese said.
