Germany asks Kyiv to “solve the issue of the Russian-speaking minority in the east”
The Ukrainian authorities must pursue a more balanced policy towards national minorities.
This was stated in an interview with Kommersant by the deputy chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, Ralf Stegner, who is now applying for the post of leader of the SPD.
He believes that the Ukrainian crisis has a solution. The publication’s interlocutor also said that he had the impression that Moscow now has a more positive attitude towards the new Ukrainian authorities than towards the leadership under the previous president.
In addition, says a representative of one of the ruling parties in Germany, “it will be important to resolve the issue of the Russian-speaking minority in eastern Ukraine.”
“And I understand how important this is, because in my state, Schleswig-Holstein, minority policy plays an important role. We have a Danish minority, and in 2012-2017 its representatives were even part of the ruling coalition of the federal state, the government of which I was part. And we see - from the example of Catalonia, the Balkans, Scotland - that the national question is important for many. I am sure that a policy can be pursued in relation to a minority that would suit the majority, but it should not constantly fuel conflicts in society,” Stegner said.
