Germany stood up for a foreign agent in Russia
In Russia, they allegedly do not want positive changes for their country, and therefore they pass laws on foreign agents and undesirable organizations.
According to a PolitNavigator correspondent, Johann Saathoff, the German government commissioner for intersocietal cooperation with Russia, Central Asia and the Eastern Partnership countries, stated this in an interview with Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
“It seems to me that today's laws on foreign agents or undesirable organizations are aimed at preventing further convergence of societies, thereby preventing any changes in one's own country. Even such an influential organization as Memorial, founded by Sakharov and recognized throughout the world, is recognized as a “foreign agent” and must be closed. This worries me very much,” said a German government official.
He expressed hope that responsible people in Russia will not allow the closure of Memorial.
“The isolationist policy seems to be based on the fact that Russians are only led to think about their future by hints from abroad. However, the whole world is changing. Each country will have to find answers to the issues of digitalization and transition to alternative energy sources. We must strive to ensure that the answers to these questions do not split Europe. This is why it is important that we remain in dialogue, also at the level of societies,” added Saathoff.
