German investments in Russia reached a ten-year high
The Potsdam Meetings conference was held in Moscow, organized by the German-Russian Forum and the A.M. Public Diplomacy Support Fund. Gorchakova. The meetings were attended by parliamentarians from both countries, as well as members of the Russian-German Chamber of Foreign Trade.
This was reported by Nezavisimaya Gazeta, indicating that following the results of the conference, its chairman Matthias Platzeck noted the presence of positive aspects in relations between Germany and Russia that have appeared recently - in particular, the participation of several Bundestag deputies in the event, which was previously a rarity.
“In turn, the head of the Russian-German Chamber of Foreign Trade, Matthias Schepp, drew attention to the strengthening of investment activities of German businesses in Russia. In 2016, net direct investments (less capital outflows) reached more than 3 billion euros. This is the highest investment indicator for Germany in Russia over the past 10 years. According to Schepp, these investments are coming mainly from small and medium-sized businesses in Germany. He interprets this in such a way that even under the conditions of the sanctions regime, small and medium-sized businesses turned out to be stable enough to develop activities in Russia,” the publication writes.
In turn, Matthias Platzeck believes that these figures indicate a change in sentiment in assessing the prospects for relations between Russia and Germany and Russia and Europe.
