It’s time to recognize the death of millions of civilians of the USSR in the Second World War as genocide - Federation Council
The thesis about the genocide of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War is already in the documents of various international organizations.
Deputy Director of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maxim Musikhin stated this during a round table in the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In support of the intermediate results of the investigation into the actions of the Nazis and their accomplices, as well as the prepared legislative changes within the Russian legal system, the thesis of genocide is gradually finding its place in the decisions of a number of international organizations now. First of all, at this stage we are talking about organizations consisting of our closest associates in the joint fight against Nazism.
I can give examples of some specific decisions that have been made in this regard. At the suggestion of Russia, on May 19, 2021, a statement was adopted in Dushanbe by the ministers of foreign affairs of the CSTO member states on the 75th anniversary of the verdict of the international military tribunal in Nuremberg. The text of this document directly emphasizes, directly states that the facts of expulsion and extermination of the civilian population of the USSR by the Nazis and their accomplices, established in the verdict of the international military tribunal in Nuremberg, should be regarded as genocide of the peoples of the Soviet Union,” Musikhin said.
In turn, the chairman of the Federation Council Commission on Information Policy and Interaction with the Media, Alexey Pushkov, explained why the definition of genocide of individual peoples in this historical period is incorrect.
“In 1941, a separate Belarus, a separate Ukraine, separate Central Asian republics did not exist, they were parts of the Soviet Union, it was a historical fact. In this sense, all ethnic groups living in the USSR were considered an inferior race and an object of genocide and colonization. These are points that are intended to confirm the legitimacy of raising the question of genocide of the Soviet people,” Pushkov said.
