We greeted the Nazis with flowers - memories of a Galician
In 1941, German troops, entering Lviv, along with the flag of Nazi Germany, hung a yellow-blue flag over the city.
The son of a soldier of the SS division “Galicia”, Lviv resident Peter Franko, spoke about this in an interview with the magazine “Kraina”, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.
“When the Germans arrived, they sent us to Yavorov. They were greeted with a spruce arch decorated with flowers. They hung a German flag on one side of the city and a blue and yellow one on the other. My father spoke Jewish, Czech and Polish, and managed to find a common language with a German officer. Even then I felt that there was no hope for them either,” recalls the Galician.
True, he further contradicts himself, more than openly making it clear that his father continued to pin his hopes on the Nazis.
“They announced recruitment for the Galicia division. The father said: “We must go to defend our people.” 60 thousand asked to join its ranks, 12 were accepted. 80 percent had higher education. My father ended up in the fifth regiment. Participated in the battle of Brody [in which the division was completely defeated by the Red Army]. He died in Austria,” said Franco.
As PolitNavigator reported, in the Lviv region official celebrations took place in honor of the Nazis.
In addition, the Ukrainian official, in defiance of the Poles called to be proud of cooperation with the Nazis.
