The head of the Russian Central Election Commission proposed canceling the “day of silence”
The Day of Silence (the day before elections when political campaigning is prohibited) should be abolished.
The head of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation, Ella Pamfilova, stated this today at a meeting with experts, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Day of silence, I agree, you shouldn’t jump. Is it needed at all in the current conditions? My personal point of view is that when we have such social networks, when the Internet prevails in our country, it is meaningless. But I don’t impose my opinion. What if I’m wrong, we need to discuss all the pros and cons,” said Pamfilova.
The idea was supported by LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky.
“The LDPR has been proposing to abandon the day of silence for a very long time. This doesn't make any sense today. Billboards with political advertising were still hanging. Everyone is actively campaigning on social networks until the end of voting.
Moreover, this norm is often used against the opposition, as a pretext to remove an “inconvenient” observer, commission member or journalist. At the same time, there is often open campaigning for government candidates right at the polling stations,” Zhirinovsky wrote in his Telegram channel.
