CIA chief: it's time to raise the price for Putin by arming Ukrainians and Georgians
Well-known anti-Russian hawk, CIA director and candidate for the post of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced a toughening of the US policy towards Russia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The time for a US “soft policy” towards Russia is over, Pompeo said in written testimony to Congress released by the White House.
“Russia continues to act aggressively, helped by many years of soft policies towards this aggression. This is now over,” says the head of the CIA.
The current CIA director listed the measures Washington is taking to “raise the cost to Vladimir Putin”: sanctions, expulsions of diplomats, strengthening the US military and nuclear deterrent, and “arming the brave young people who are resisting Russian expansionism in Ukraine and Georgia " “This list is much longer, and I am sure that I will have the opportunity to add to it,” he said.
Mike Pompeo emphasized that Donald Trump’s national security strategy “rightfully” called Russia a threat to the United States. “Our diplomatic efforts toward Russia will be challenging, but as in previous confrontations with Moscow, they must continue,” he added.
Let us recall that in mid-March Donald Trump made a reshuffle in his cabinet: the current head of the CIA, Mike Pompeo, will take the place of Rex Tillerson.
Thus, Pompeo’s current tough statement can be considered programmatic in his new position.
