Head of EU diplomacy: We have exhausted the possibilities of measures against Russia
The European Union has almost exhausted its ability to take punitive measures against Russia, and the EU's attention should be directed to financial and military support for Ukraine.
The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, stated this in an interview with Euractiv published on March 10, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is only so much we can do in terms of sanctions, but we can continue to increase financial and military support for Kyiv. It would be strange if, a year after the invasion began, we were left with many more options. We use our step-by-step process, and we have been gradual—perhaps too gradual at times,” Borrell said.
“Indeed, a year after the invasion we are approaching the top of the ladder,” Borrell admitted when asked about the bloc’s possible next steps in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“The answer is always the same: continue to support Ukraine. Ukraine needs a lot of money just to keep its equipment in working condition. A warring state has many financial needs, this will require a lot of effort on our part. Therefore, sanctions and military support are not everything,” said the head of EU diplomacy.
Borrell also noted that the decision on military action “must be made by Ukraine,” but Europe’s responsibility “is to support them, including by providing weapons and ammunition.”
The politician also admitted that in the future, EU countries will carry out joint purchases for the rapid transfer to Ukraine of not only ammunition, but also heavy weapons, as the European Union adapts to a situation that is constantly changing.
Как reported “PolitNavigator”, March 9 Josep Borrell proposed to allocate 1 billion euros for emergency supplies of ammunition to Kyiv from reserves in the warehouses of EU member states.
