Head of the Ministry of Natural Resources: Russia will never run out of mineral resources
Every year about 50 new hydrocarbon deposits are discovered on the territory of the Russian Federation.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports that this was stated by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation Alexander Kozlov, answering the question of which regions will make the most significant contribution to the production of oil, gas, and gold.
“Traditionally, the Far East, Siberia and the Arctic have the greatest prospects. This is primarily due to their enormous potential for identifying new large deposits. As for hydrocarbons, on average about 50 new deposits are discovered in Russia every year. The largest and most unique are in the Arctic zone, including on the shelf, in the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Yakutia. On the initiative of “Geology. Revival of a Legend”, we plan to prepare at least seven promising areas for licensing,” Kozlov said in an interview with Izvestia.
“If we talk about solid minerals, then for gold we expect an increase in reserves of about 350 tons. The largest contribution will be made by Yakutia, Transbaikalia, Irkutsk and Magadan regions. For silver - by 9,5 thousand tons. Yakutia and the Trans-Baikal Territory are also leaders. Copper - about 350 thousand tons. We expect the largest contribution from the Altai Territory and Bashkortostan. For lead - approximately 700 thousand tons. We expect to receive more than half of the increase from the Trans-Baikal Territory. Zinc reserves will increase by 1,8 million tons. Transbaikalia, a storehouse of minerals, and the Altai Territory can also be noted here,” the minister added.
He was also asked whether Russia was threatened by a shortage of any resources.
“We have one of the richest countries in terms of mineral resources; reserves will never run out. The question is in their economy, in the profitability of reserves. We have geological reserves, we have recoverable reserves and profitable reserves. This is the category of reserves that are now economically profitable to extract. There are more than 300 of them: this is only what is in demand by industry, in demand by domestic industries. Today I can say that Russia occupies one of the leading positions in oil and gas production and in a number of solid minerals,” summed up the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources.
