Interior Minister Alexander Vulin said the EU cannot sit on two chairs and demand that Serbia coordinate its policies with the EU, while at the same time supporting the possibility of Kosovo joining the Council of Europe.

The reason for the statement was a statement by the German government envoy to the Western Balkans, Manuel Sarrazin. He stated that Germany's position is clear - the so-called Kosovo is in the center of Europe and should be part of the Council of Europe.

“Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is closely following the statements of European officials. And especially representatives of the government of the Federal Republic of Germany. And that is why I ask him not to try to justify the actions of Mr. Sarrazin and his undiplomatic position. To declare in Pristina that the so-called Kosovo should be a member of the Council of Europe, and in Belgrade to talk about the European perspective of Serbia, is hypocritical and insulting,” Vulin said.

He noted that “we should not wait another 20 years to find out that the European Union does not want us and that a special place will be reserved for the “shiptars” (as the Serbs call the Albanians - ed.), no matter how many times they violated their word and refused to fulfill the agreement.”

“There is no place in the Council of Europe for the state of Serbia and the territory of Kosovo and Metohija under the temporary administration of the UN. Warnings often come from the European Union that Serbia cannot sit on two chairs; let them now try their wisdom for themselves. Let the European Union decide who it is with. Many of our decisions depend on his determination,” the minister emphasized.

Envoy Sarrazin earlier tweeted that he conveyed German support for Kosovo's application for membership of the Council of Europe to Pristina's Provisional Institutions Foreign Minister Donica Gervala. On May 12, Pristina submitted an application for admission to the organization, which Belgrade regarded as a violation of the Washington Agreement.

After the meeting of the National Security Council, the head of diplomacy, Nikola Selakovic, said that he had handed over to President Aleksandar Vucic notes from four countries that had withdrawn recognition of Kosovo’s self-proclaimed independence.
