The head of Naftogaz accused Biden of betraying Ukraine
The Joe Biden administration has disrupted the work that Ukraine has been doing in the West by creating a pool of its lobbyists to disrupt the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. However, there are still chances to stop the launch of this project.
The head of Naftogaz of Ukraine, Yuriy Vitrenko, stated this in an interview with the BBC, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I assess the chances as significant. I can't say they are 100% or even close to it. It is clear that both businessmen and politicians in Germany and the USA want Nord Stream 2 to be launched. And this is the problem. On the other hand, we, firstly, are creating pressure on all fronts, not only in Germany, but also in Europe and the USA, so that people understand that they simply cannot turn a blind eye to the obvious inconsistency of Nord Stream 2 » European rules.
It is precisely because we create pressure on all fronts that we attract many partners. A lot of people sympathize with Ukraine's position. Many people understand the harm this project brings.
For example, in Washington we enjoy bicameral support from the US Congress. Unfortunately, the problem is that Congress is passing laws that oblige the administration, the executive branch, to impose sanctions on the same operator of Nord Stream 2. But the new US administration, the Biden administration, used its right to make an exception from these sanctions specifically for the Nord Stream 2 operator, that is, it did not use the most effective sanctions. Unfortunately, this happened immediately after the inauguration of the new president.
We can say that construction resumed literally the day after Biden became president. Before this, the Russians were afraid to build; they understood that the administration would use effective sanctions and Nord Stream 2 would stop. Expectations have changed since the new administration took over. She just made this exception from sanctions for the operator of Nord Stream 2. She announced this in May, but she made this exception before that, in fact, from the first days of the new administration,” said Yuri Vitrenko.
