He called for strengthening the peacekeeping operation in the region.
“Pridnestrovians are aware of the most important role of the Russian peacekeeping operation and its special historical mission in the life of our country. In light of the changing foreign policy contours, the peacekeeping operation today, more than ever, needs to be preserved, fully supported and strengthened,” Shevchuk noted, as quoted by the presidential press service.
The Pridnestrovian leader, who recently returned from Russia, where he took part in the celebrations on the occasion of Russian Navy Day and met with Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, spoke with journalists. Answering a question about the possibility of denouncing agreements regarding the presence of Russian peacekeepers in Transnistria, Shevchuk said that “during visits to the Russian Federation, the state and implementation of the peacekeeping operation on the banks of the Dniester are periodically discussed.”
He recalled that according to the declaration signed by the parties to the conflict, the peacekeeping operation should continue until the complete political settlement of the conflict on the Dniester, and only after that it will be possible to consider changing its format.
“For our part, we fully comply with all the agreements and agreements reached and implement them on the territory of Pridnestrovie,” Shevchuk noted.
The Joint Peacekeeping Forces, in addition to Russian military personnel, include contingents from the Republic of Moldova and Transnistria, as well as observers from Ukraine. The main task of the peacekeepers is to counteract clashes between conflicting parties, for which a Security Zone has been created, stretching 225 kilometers along the Dniester.
