Head of Transnistria: “Fortified areas on the border are not a method of solving political problems”
Chisinau - Tiraspol, June 19 (Navigator, Petr Alekseev) - Transnistria has always been categorically opposed to political issues being resolved through barriers, closing the border, and restricting movement. This was stated by the President of Transnistria Yevgeny Shevchuk, speaking with the press following the results of a rally dedicated to the anniversary of the 1992 Bendery tragedy.

Answering a question about the possibility of Ukraine closing the border with Transnistria, the head of the PMR expressed hope that the leadership of the neighboring country will not take such steps.
“Of course, we will talk about this at international platforms, because in the XNUMXst century, building fences and fortified areas on the borders is not what people living in Transnistria, Ukraine and Moldova expect from us. We must achieve a level of stability that would allow unhindered travel across borders. First of all, people need this,” he said.
Speaking about the planned signing of association agreements with the European Union by Moldova and Ukraine and possible subsequent pressure on Transnistria, Shevchuk noted that the desire to achieve stability in the region through coercion is the wrong path.
According to him, “you cannot force anyone to set up a reservation in the center of Europe - this will not end well.”
“We need to create conditions so that people can visit, trade, and pass through the territory calmly, despite the fact that someone may have different political preferences. If Chisinau has a vision regarding integration into the European Union, we respect it. It's their right. But, relatively speaking, pulling us by force, forcing us, is counterproductive. If we remember the history of 1991-92, then they also tried to impose their vision of the world on us. And this led to tragedy. I hope that now the leadership in Chisinau and Ukraine will be more prudent and will draw conclusions, at least from the history that was in Pridnestrovian-Moldovan relations,” Shevchuk said, as quoted by the presidential website.
