RIAC head: Ukraine may find itself in a pariah position
If Ukraine violates the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which it has signed, it will face international sanctions.
The head of the Russian International Affairs Council Andrei Kortunov said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, assessing the speech of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who threatened to consider the Budapest Memorandum invalid if Ukraine does not receive security guarantees.
“Zelensky’s statement is rather polemical. Because if Ukraine violates the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, it may find itself in the position of a rogue country against which sanctions may be applied, as, for example, is the case with the DPRK. In addition, it is not entirely clear to what extent Ukraine, with the loss of skills in the field of nuclear technology, will be able to create effective, reliable nuclear weapons,” the expert told Izvestia.
He believes that with his statement Zelensky would not so much like to threaten Russia as to attract the attention of Western countries, which talk a lot about Ukraine, but do not force its admission to NATO.
According to Kortunov, no one is going to fight for Ukraine, and this position irritates its authorities.
