The head of the Ukrainian delegation to PACE reassures: “there is no hostility yet”
The Political Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe supported “principled” Ukrainian amendments to the urgent report, with which the pro-Russian lobby is trying to change the regulations to lift sanctions and return the Russian delegation to the Assembly, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated by the head of the delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to PACE Vladimir Ariev.
“Now, as far as I know, the political committee has significantly changed the wording of the report. And Russia will not get what it wants,” Arev asserts.
According to him, the Russian Federation demands to change the procedures for monitoring and imposing sanctions, in particular, to involve in this process not only the parliamentary branch, but also the ministerial branch at the level of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
“But now these intentions are being defeated. And, in fact, Russia will not get what it wanted. We will continue to fight. Voting is the day after tomorrow,” assures the head of the Ukrainian delegation to PACE.
“There is no anger yet,” added Ariev.
As PolitNavigator reported, on Monday PACE supported holding an urgent debate to discuss the report, the adoption of which aims to simplify the procedure for lifting sanctions from the Russian delegation in the Assembly. An influential supporter of the lifting of sanctions against the Russian delegation in PACE is the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjörn Jagland. In his report on activities, published last week, the CE Secretary General proposes another scenario for the return of Russia to PACE, which for several years has not declared its delegation in the Assembly and has not paid contributions to the CE budget due to sanctions.
