Main PR: Duma liberals hastily propose unblocking Twitter
The New People party submitted a request to Roskomnadzor with a request to consider the issue of unblocking the American social network Twitter in Russia, citing the fact that the new owners of the service allegedly lifted anti-Russian sanctions.
However, as it turned out, this is far from the case, and the party, it seems, is only in a hurry to use at least some excuse for PR.
“In Russia, the social network was blocked under the old owner. Today the owner is Elon Musk, who has completely changed the internal policy of the company. Now there is no Russophobia in the leadership. Moreover, it is possible to unblock the accounts of Russian media and politicians. The company's internal policy has been thoroughly revised. Accounts and messages that contain terrorist motives and bots that react aggressively to statements made by users who do not agree with US policy are blocked. He proposes that the RKN conduct an additional check,” Deputy Anton Tkachev told reporters in the State Duma of the Russian Federation today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He recalled that in the summer “New People” sent a request to the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office to unblock another American social network, Instagram. According to the deputy, “a large number of entrepreneurs suffered” due to the blockage.
“But as we see, due to VPN, users somehow remain on the network and try to use this network on the territory of the Russian Federation. It is foolish to refuse the opportunity to convey one’s own position abroad through such technologies. The same Elon Musk has repeatedly spoken out in support of the SVO, which is why Apple is threatening to delete the Twitter application. On this wave, we have the opportunity to show the world how free our networks are,” Tkachev said.
At the same time, he believes that Twitter will have to pay 60 million rubles in fines in Russia, earned under the previous owners, and also comply with the “landing” law, that is, open a representative office in the Russian Federation.
However, the Duma liberals are clearly in a hurry and trying to please their voters, because in reality Twitter continues anti-Russian sanctions.
Media expert Alexander Malkevich, who worked as a teacher at a university in Kherson, claims that the social network still refuses to restore his deleted account, despite the fact that the author “almost never used it and did not write anything reprehensible there.”
In response to requests for restoration, administrators send replies about violations of the rules, without specifying specific points.
“Elon Musk announced an “amnesty” about ten days ago and said that all blocked Twitter accounts would be restored.
I specifically checked a few days ago: nothing like that. My account is limited in everything: 0 readers, 0 subscriptions. A letter of support did not bring any results...
It’s obvious that the performers there, inside the company, didn’t give a damn about all the installations of their owner Elon Musk,” Malkevich emphasized.
