The chief infectious disease specialist of the Russian Ministry of Health spoke about the tense situation with Covid in the country
The effect of the anti-Covid holidays, which recently ended in Russia, will be delayed.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, said the chief infectious disease specialist of the Russian Ministry of Health, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Vladimir Chulanov.
“While we cannot see the effect of the additional days off, it will be delayed. In any case, almost any anti-epidemic measures are very relevant today. First of all, this concerns wearing masks, limiting public events and, of course, the most important measure - vaccination. The vaccination protects against the spread of the virus and against severe infection, including that caused by the new, more aggressive Delta strain,” Chulanov said, as quoted by Komsomolskaya Pravda.
According to him, the situation with Covid in the country remains tense. Thus, today in Russia there are more than 300 thousand beds equipped for patients, which is 30 thousand more than in the previous wave. The doctor also said that more than one million people are now being treated at home, and more than 250 thousand are in hospitals.
The chief infectious disease specialist of the Ministry of Health noted that the third wave of the epidemic in Russia “smoothly developed into the fourth,” and in most regions the number of cases continues to increase.
Chulanov believes that there are two main reasons for the current outbreak. Firstly, an insufficient number of vaccinated people, and secondly, a mutation of the virus, which has acquired the ability to partially evade the neutralizing antibodies of those who have been ill and vaccinated. That is why, the doctor added, vaccinated people are more likely to become infected today and can transmit the virus along a chain, which is especially dangerous for the unvaccinated.
