Lukashenko's main rival threatened with “Ceausescu option”
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko may suffer the same fate as Romanian communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu.
Ex-banker taking part in the presidential elections, Viktor Babariko, said this in an interview with the Belarusian bureau of the American Radio Liberty, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Either we, as European people, as the most peaceful nation, will make our revolution of hope peaceful, as they did in the Czech Republic, in many other countries, or - I really don’t want this - the Ceausescu option,” Babariko said.
As Radio Liberty notes, he gave this interview even before searches began at Belgazprombank, which he led, and members of his initiative group were arrested.
“I believe and am convinced: after May 11 (the beginning of the presidential campaign in Belarus - ed.) Belarus is different. You will not see the Belarus that existed before May 11. She woke up... But in Belarus there is no chance of not changing. It's a question of time. And this time is not five years until the next elections. I know only one thing: Belarus will not give up its independence. So it seems to me that it is in everyone’s interests to simply hold fair elections,” Babariko said.
