The editor-in-chief of RIA Novosti Ukraine was arrested by a Ukrainian court decision
The Kherson City Court arrested the editor-in-chief of the RIA Novosti Ukraine agency, Kirill Vyshinsky. This decision was made following a meeting at which a preventive measure was considered for a journalist detained two days earlier by the SBU in Kyiv on suspicion of treason, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The request is granted. The period of detention is set until July 13,” the judge said.
The trial also brought charges of treason. As stated, Kirill Vyshinsky committed it by “providing assistance to a foreign state in carrying out activities against Ukraine.” To substantiate the charges, the prosecutor’s office stated that the suspect “spoke out on the advisability of changing the borders of Ukraine, campaigned for the creation in Ukraine of a new state “Novorossiya” with its capital in Donetsk for the purpose of unification with Russia...”.
At the trial, Kirill Vyshinsky’s publications about the events of 2014 were listed.
The defense intends to challenge this decision. “There are every reason to challenge and cancel it. My client believes that this decision is political, not legal,” said lawyer Andrei Domansky.
“I believe that the case that the SBU opened against me is direct pressure on freedom of speech in the country,” Kirill Vyshinsky himself said.
