The heads of the State Department and NATO discussed Putin's dreams
The head of the US State Department, Mike Pompeo, suspected the Russian leadership of seeking to split NATO and weaken “democratic countries,” a PolyTNavigator correspondent reports.
During a speech following talks between the foreign ministers of NATO member countries in Washington, Pompeo said that one of the topics of discussion was opposition to “unconventional methods” of struggle on the part of Russia, which included interference in elections in Western countries, AFP reported.
“Vladimir Putin harbors dark dreams of imperialism,” Pompeo said. “This is obvious based on the history of invasions in Georgia and Ukraine, interference in Syria and Venezuela. He wants to split our alliance and weaken our commitment to upholding democracy,” the US foreign policy chief said.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also agreed with Pompeo. During the press conference, a journalist asked him if the head of the alliance thought that NATO was deliberately provoking Russia with promises to accept Georgia and Ukraine into its ranks. “If you believe that we are talking about a provocation, then in the end you will agree that Russia can dictate its will to its neighbors,” Stoltenberg warned the journalist.
Pompeo also indicated that Washington and Ankara are continuing negotiations regarding Turkey’s purchase of the S-400 system from Russia. “The US and Turkey have every opportunity to work together. I had a long conversation with the Turkish Foreign Minister, and I am confident that we will decide what to do next,” the head of the State Department said.
The topic of Russia was not the only one during the negotiations. Pompeo said threats from China and Iran were also discussed. In this regard, the head of the State Department called on European allies not to use equipment from Huawei, as it may pose security risks.
