Ukrainian economist Viktor Skarshevsky said this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Half the country receives subsidies - poverty. The country's GDP per capita at purchasing power parity is between Swaziland and Guatemala - commodity-producing countries that do not have their own production and industry. Regarding democracy and decentralization, Ukraine has become a very centralized country since 1992. If in 1992 only 50 percent of all taxes and fees went to the state budget, then already this year 80-82 percent of all monetary resources are concentrated in Kyiv,” the expert said.
According to him, in general, the Ukrainian economy is moving along a ladder that “leads not up, but down,” since the country has never had time to recover from economic crises: after the early 90s came the crisis of 1998, after the crisis of 2008 came the disastrous 2014 th.
The economist points out that the current rate of recovery of the Ukrainian economy is so low that Ukraine will reach the level of 2013 by 2025-2027. It was also said that upon gaining independence, Ukraine had no external debt.
“The debt is now close to 100 percent of GDP. Not only is it so huge in relation to GDP, most of it must be paid back in the next five to six years. And the most important one will be on the 28th anniversary of independence, when we are expected to either default or another restructuring of our debt... Therefore, we will still gather for the 27th anniversary, but on the 28th we will most likely talk about default,” concluded Skarpshevsky.
