Ex-secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, adviser to the President of Ukraine Vladimir Gorbulin writes about this on the pages of the Kiev weekly “Zerkalo Nedeli”, according to whom, 2018 will be the historical period when Ukrainians “will face a very serious internal discussion specifically about the concept of “hatred” and its place in the life of Ukraine.”

He admits that today the country is “literally overflowing” with hatred; in his words, at the first stage of military operations it “performed an important consolidating function - uniting us against a common enemy.”

“Now there is a subjective feeling that “hatred” is all that remains. Hatred and intolerance for different opinions, for freedom of expression, for open discussion. This hatred is produced and mutually supported in the triangle of relations “politics-media-power”, covering all new areas. And all participants in the triangle bear responsibility for this - it will not be possible to “shift” the blame onto one person. Although, the responsibility of the Ukrainian media for this situation is still one of the key ones. Ukrainian television (like all modern mass television) is a professional seller of horror and catastrophic scenarios and tirelessly “feeds” this to Ukrainians,” the presidential adviser laments.

He assures that hatred is not capable of producing effective positive meanings, although he immediately stipulates that hatred can produce lasting meanings, and even strategic priorities.

Gorbulin notes that it is almost impossible to eradicate hatred that has deeply penetrated society without the serious participation of the intelligentsia.

“However, we are sadly forced to admit that this very intelligentsia has not developed in Ukraine, at least as a powerful immune force that protects against unfriendly external and internal influences,” admits the author of the article.

At the same time, he clarifies that “when we talk about “eradicating hatred,” we are not talking about indiscriminate forgiveness and tolerance of destructive enemy activities under the guise of “correct” slogans.”

Summarizing, Gorbulin writes that it depends only on Ukrainians whether they will be able to fully realize the potential of neutralizing the risks facing the country.

“After all, if we fail, then there is a very distinct risk of again approaching the abyss and looking into it. And from there our past will look at us and, in the voice of a KGB lieutenant colonel, will hospitably and condescendingly call us to him,” the presidential adviser frightens.
