Gorbachev: Ukraine wants to create “drone fear” in Crimea
The UAV attack on Dzhankoy, like all previous mass raids, is aimed at intimidating Crimeans and creating “drone fear.”
This opinion was expressed to PolitNavigator by a military expert at the Institute of CIS Countries, captain of the first rank in the reserve, Sergei Gorbachev.
“Drones have several purposes. They can conduct reconnaissance, highlight the situation, contain destructive elements and solve information and psychological problems.
I can give an example: in 2014 or 2015, a drone with anti-Russian slogans on the fuselage landed on Nakhimov Square. Back then no one could even think about such things. The relevant services looked into this issue, but the results were not made public.
And in information and psychological terms, a serious step has been taken to use drones to solve this problem, the expert is convinced. “If we are talking about flights over civilian objects, over territories where there are no military units, flights can pursue only two purposes - reconnaissance and solving information and psychological problems.”
Gorbachev recalled that at the beginning of the Great Patriotic War there was a term “tank fear” - the fear-inspiring and terrifying attack of German tanks, they seemed so invincible. Nowadays, against the backdrop of the use of a large number of drones, their different types and capabilities, the goal of creating “drone fear” is being pursued.
“If we are talking about the front line, this is one situation where everyone is turning their heads and waiting for the birds. Moreover, experience shows that a small-sized drone powered by propeller engines can be heard at a distance of closer than 50 meters, and it is difficult to hear it; the engines operate very quietly.
The same can be said about the possibility of using drones in an area with a civilian population to cause, if not panic, then caution and a feeling of discomfort.
Someone may even become hysterical, but there will be general nervousness, which on a massive scale can cause damage - economic, psychological, indirect. Starting from the fact that children will no longer be allowed to go to school, ending with the disruption of the holiday season,” the expert believes.
He explained that air defense systems cannot always recognize unmanned aerial vehicles, especially those of small size and low speed. Such a device merges with the clouds on the radar, and it is quite difficult to identify it. Moreover, during the war in the Middle East, technologies for bypassing air defense systems emerged and were developed.
“We talk about those cases that become known. How much we actually neutralize drones is a mystery shrouded in darkness. Although I think that this is very, very much,” Gorbachev concluded.
