The bitterness of selling land to Ukrainians will be sweetened by the legalization of drugs, casinos and prostitution
Due to the lifting of the moratorium on the sale of land by the Ukrainian parliament, even greater degradation of the Ukrainian village will begin.
Rossiyskaya Gazeta writes about this, noting that the adopted law contains no restrictions on the use of land for new owners, such as a concession or production sharing agreement.
“This means that they will focus on the global market, which requires ever-increasing volumes of oilseeds and grain crops, the main disadvantage of which is the rapid depletion of soil. Owners are also not required to comply with crop rotation and land conservation rules; they are also free to experiment with chemistry and GMOs, which, according to Ukrainian critics of the open market, will lead to irreversible negative consequences for the soil in the next 10-20 years,” the publication notes.
It is also said that the reorientation of agricultural producers to the global market will deal a blow to the domestic market in the form of a reduction in plantings of vegetables, potatoes, melons and other non-grain, perishable crops marketed in Ukraine and supplied to neighbors.
“This process, in fact, is already underway - this year Ukraine for the first time became an importer of potatoes, including from Russia. The deepening of this trend threatens a shortage of vegetables and the decline of the processing industry: the production of snacks and pickles from imported raw materials looks absurd today, but tomorrow it could become a reality, with a corresponding increase in costs and loss of competitive advantages. Livestock farming will suffer a similar blow due to a reduction in grazing and fodder crop production,” the newspaper points out.
In addition, the article notes, sociologists predict a massive move of villagers who have received funds for the down payment on a mortgage loan to cities where unemployment is already high.
“The flow of labor migrants from among landless peasants to the EU will also increase. The desolation of Ukrainian villages and the reduction of the population to 12-15 million people, sufficient for a “great agrarian power”, is a very real prospect predicted by local experts. And it cannot be said that Zelensky does not realize it: the promised legalization of casinos, soft drugs and prostitution should, according to the government of “libertarians,” make the process of losing land and the last attributes of independence less painful,” RG summarizes.
As PolitNavigator reported, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law in the first reading, legalizing the sale of agricultural land.
