The unpleasant smell that comes from the sludge settling tanks of the Gorvodokanal treatment facilities in Mariupol harms the lives of people living in the villages of Pokrovskoye and Rybatskoye, as well as in the Cheryomushki microdistrict and the village of Moryakov.

This is described in a video prepared by journalists from the Mariupol TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

The stench from the sludge settling tanks of the Gorvodokanal treatment facilities has been getting stronger lately. People just can't breathe. Thus, Victoria, a resident of the village of Moryakov, says that 10 years ago she moved here due to health reasons, to be closer to the sea.

“We are suffocating from the fetid smell, which we constantly have every evening, starting at 19 pm and ending at about 6 am. The foul smell comes from the treatment facilities located in the village of Pokrovskoye. They respond to our constant complaints to the city authorities: they transfer them to Gorvodokanal. From there we received the answer: “Gorvodokanal” cannot cope with this problem on its own, since they do not have the funds,” complains Victoria.

Let us note that if previously people felt this smell for about 15 minutes a day, now it is felt almost all day long.

Another resident of the village named Alexander Reprintsev said that this situation has developed since the late 80s, and Ukraine has done nothing to eliminate this problem in 26 years of independence.

“For 26 years of independent Ukraine, no one has done anything here. Here there are fields nearby and dachas - no one does anything, precipitation is dumped, no odor-killing bacteria are added.”

As for the situation in the village of Pokrovskoye itself, most people suffer from allergies due to the stench.

“As soon as there is a south or west wind, everything comes at us, we are suffocating, we are sitting in the toilet, sitting in the toilet, sitting in the yard - there is no difference,” notes a resident of the village of Pokrovskoye.

Another notes that the situation has only gotten worse over time:

“And the smell itself changed, even 2 years ago, somehow it passed, but this one persists, as if you were dipped in there, and the smell is pungent.”

The fact that most of the 93 settling tanks have already outlived their usefulness was confirmed by a worker at the treatment plant. He said that most of the pipes through which settled water should flow into the sea are clogged with silt. That’s why it evaporates so much without drainage. The worker noted that the structure had not been repaired for several decades.

To all requests from the Gorvodokanal of the Primorsky district administration and the authorities of Mariupol, people answer that they know about the problem, but there is no money. According to the water utility, about 9 million euros are needed to eliminate this problem.

Director of the Gorvodokanal KP Gennady Izyumov, in turn, said that they are already working on the problem:

“German representatives expressed a desire to help Mariupol. They have concepts for solving problems from an idea to a proposal for specific equipment. In addition to inviting foreign companies, the option of developing a project with the involvement of specialized Ukrainian specialists through a tender is being considered,” journalists quote him.

Let us note that the development and implementation of the project is included in the development program of Mariupol for 2018-2022. As the mayor of Mariupol noted at a large press conference with the media, the main thing in this matter is to receive money from the World Bank for the project.

“The reconstruction of this facility costs, according to estimates (we invited technical specialists from Austria), they are ready to undertake, 16 million euros. There is no such money in the budget,” Boychenko said.
