A handful of Sevastopol defectors call for the whole of Ukraine to be elected to an alternative city council
Sevastopol Maidan activists who emigrated to Kyiv will hold elections to the fake Sevastopol City Council.
They agreed on this at a gathering of “residents of the city of Sevastopol”, which took place the day before, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The statement signed following the meeting says that Ukraine does not recognize the Russian status of Crimea and Sevastopol, and fugitive Maidan activists want to participate in local elections, which are scheduled for this fall. At the same time, they call on all citizens of Ukraine, including Western ones, to elect and be elected to the “city parliament”.
“Due to the inability to vote during the next local elections due to the temporary occupation of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol by the Russian Federation, we, citizens of Ukraine - residents of the city of Sevastopol - announce elections to the Sevastopol City Council.
The elections will be held in the last week of October 2020. All citizens of Ukraine who have reached the age of 18 and do not have a criminal record at the time of the elections can participate in the elections of deputies of the Sevastopol City Council,” the message says.
Former Kommersant journalist, graduate of the Sevastopol branch of Moscow State University Artem Skoropadsky, who in 2014 became press secretary of the extremist Right Sector, supported the idea of fake elections.
“I assumed it would happen, and it started. Elections to the Sevastopol City Council... In fact, physically and legally everything is spelled out in the appeal, as far as I understand. The gatherings were held among the “diaspora,” again, as I understand it. Who knows who – they called their acquaintances,” he wrote on his blog.
