State Department: We didn’t believe in Putin’s determination and screwed up Crimea
American intelligence services missed the moment of reunification of Crimea with Russia, not counting on Moscow actually deciding to reunite with the peninsula.
US State Department Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker, who previously advised the CIA, said this in an interview with Ukrainian propagandist Dmitry Gordon, justifying the lack of assistance from Washington, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Volker, the US leadership in 2014 did not believe that Russia would accept Crimea into its territory.
“I think we didn't react quickly enough. I don't think we believed that Russia would actually invade Ukraine. We did not believe that Russia would really seize Crimea.
And then as soon as they did that, we started reacting. I think we just didn't believe they would do it again. Therefore, in my opinion, in this sense we were not as prompt as necessary,” Volker said.
