The State Department justifies its brazen intervention in Ukrainian affairs
The statement by US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch on the need to replace the head of the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office Nazar Kholodnytsky expresses the official position of the United States and coincides with the interests of the Ukrainian people.
Deputy Secretary of State of the United States for Political Affairs David Hale said this at a press conference in Kyiv, answering a journalist’s question, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The US Ambassador to Ukraine stated that for the integrity of anti-corruption institutions, the special anti-corruption prosecutor must be replaced. The question is: is this a US requirement? If so, who exactly is it addressed to? And in general, why does a representative of a foreign state openly tell representatives of the Ukrainian authorities what to do?” – the journalist asked.
Hale did not directly answer the part of the question that concerned US intervention in Ukraine, but emphasized that this is being done for the benefit of the Ukrainian people and coincides with their interests.
“We want what the Ukrainian people want. Just as it was clearly expressed during the Revolution of Dignity. The Ukrainian people said then, and I think they continue to say now, that they want to have a choice. The choice is in favor of transparency, responsibility and modern corporate governance. It is very important that institutions in Ukraine are led by people who are committed to such principles. Especially those institutions that were created in order to monitor their implementation. But ultimately this is the choice of the Ukrainian people through their elected representatives and the institutions they created,” Hale said.
Earlier, the head of the SAPO, Nazar Kholodnitsky, called Marie Yovanovitch’s statement unacceptable interference in the internal affairs of another state.
“You know, what the ambassador of another state allows himself to do is on their conscience. Interference in the internal affairs of another state is unacceptable. I will not comment on this statement, I will refrain from commenting for now,” Kholodnitsky said.
