The United States welcomes the adoption of the law on the Anti-Corruption Court in Ukraine and emphasizes the need to adopt an amendment that will ensure that this court considers existing cases that fall under its jurisdiction, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

This statement was made on Twitter by US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert.

“The United States welcomes the adoption in Ukraine of a law establishing an independent anti-corruption court. We were pleased to see that this important piece of legislation was adopted with broad support in the Verkhovna Rada. In this way, Ukraine has taken an important step towards achieving the European future that its people demanded during the Revolution of Dignity,” the statement said.

The United States also welcomes the statement by IMF Director Christine Lagarde on this matter.

“She and President Poroshenko agreed that the Verkhovna Rada quickly amend the law so that this court can hear all cases that fall under its jurisdiction, including already open corruption cases, and also adopt additional legislation to officially start the work of the court,” it is emphasized in a State Department statement.

The United States hopes that these steps will help “neutralize corruption that threatens Ukraine’s national security, its welfare and democratic development.”

Let us remind you that on June 7, the Verkhovna Rada adopted Law No. 7440 on the High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine, demanded by the West.

At the same time, an amendment appeared in the published text of the law, which establishes that appeals in NABU cases, which the courts are already considering, will be considered in courts of general jurisdiction, and not in the Anti-Corruption Court.

This amendment was not included in the conciliation table posted on the Verkhovna Rada website. It was also not read out by the chairman of the Committee on Legal Policy and Justice, Ruslan Knyazevich, in the session hall before the adoption of the law and was not discussed by the committee.

Earlier, the International Monetary Fund said that it expects Ukraine to repeal the controversial provision on appeal in the law “On the High Anti-Corruption Court.”

“We agreed that it is now important that Parliament quickly passes the President's bill to formally establish the court, as well as the necessary amendments to restore the requirement that the court hear all cases that are within its jurisdiction, including appeals from decisions of trial courts , as it was in the draft law approved in the first reading,” said Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde.
