The State Duma did not support simplified citizenship for Transnistria
The State Duma of the Russian Federation rejected the amendment to the law “On Citizenship”, which provided for simplified acquisition of citizenship for residents of Transnistria. It proposed to call the PMR “territory of Moldova, where Russian is the official language».
The amendment was introduced by United Russia deputy Konstantin Zatulin, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This is an attempt to find an answer to the question of how, for example, we can help people in the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, which is not recognized by us. I would like to note: at the same time, our Foreign Ministry is already rightly making statements that we will defend the territory of Transnistria in the same way as the territory of the Russian Federation if Moldova or Ukraine, together with Moldova, try not only to blockade, but also to carry out an armed invasion there.
We are talking about the possibility of simplified citizenship for citizens of that part of the recognized Republic of Moldova where Russian is the official language. In Transnistria, Russian is the official language along with Moldavian and Ukrainian. Not in Moldova. We give them such preference because of this.
That is why I proposed this amendment - to get out of the situation without naming the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Republic. I tried to find a way out. And the respected leaders of the State Duma know that I have been doing this for many years - trying to achieve a special order for Pridnestrovie,” explained Zatulin.
The rapporteur on the citizenship bill, Artem Turov, rejected the amendment, despite the fact that he represents residents of Transnistria who have Russian citizenship in the Duma.
“Colleagues, I, as a deputy who also represents the residents of Pridnestrovie, am well aware of the problems, and we, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, work individually on each appeal regarding the citizenship that certain citizens living in this territory, want to receive.
Currently, in addition to the Russian Federation, the Russian language has been given official or state status in the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kyrgyzstan and the Republic of South Ossetia. Thus, the number of states or their individual territories that have established Russian as the state or official language is very limited. The committee does not support the amendment,” Turov said.
