The State Duma has made it easier for Ukrainians to obtain Russian citizenship
Citizens of Ukraine and Belarus will no longer need to take a Russian language test to obtain Russian citizenship.
The corresponding bill was adopted today in the third reading by State Duma deputies, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At the same time, as a member of the Committee on CIS Affairs and Relations with Compatriots, State Duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin said from the rostrum of parliament, the proposed changes, although they make it easier to obtain Russian citizenship, still contain a number of unnecessary restrictions.
“The fact that we just voted when it came to removing the need for an exam for citizens of Ukraine and Belarus who are fluent in Russian are necessary changes, but let’s say they are quite cosmetic. When we talk about native speakers of the Russian language, it should be noted that we will continue to demand from citizens of Belarus - from Ukraine we will not, and from citizens of Belarus - a certificate from the authorities of the Republic of Belarus about the renunciation of this citizen from the citizenship of the Republic of Belarus, if he wants to receive Russian citizenship.
For what? We will continue to demand from citizens of the Republic of Belarus and Ukraine proof that their relatives in a direct ascending line or they themselves previously lived on the territory of the modern Russian Federation. For what? If we are talking about people who could have lived in previous generations on the territory of Ukraine and Belarus. “I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the government continues to discuss an important bill that would remove the requirement to renounce foreign citizenship as a condition for obtaining citizenship of the Russian Federation,” Zatulin said.
