The State Duma refused to prohibit senators from having real estate abroad
State Duma deputies failed amendments to the law on the procedure for forming the Federation Council, which would have prohibited senators from owning real estate abroad.
The corresponding amendments were initiated by a member of the Communist Party faction Alexey Kurinny, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the politician, as long as the senator has real estate outside of Russia, he cannot be a patriot of his country.
“A senator of the Russian Federation can be a citizen of the Russian Federation who has reached the age of 30, has an impeccable reputation, and permanently resides in the Russian Federation. But here, in our opinion, there is no very important detail - this is a patriot. If we are talking about patriots, then this is a person who should not have real estate registered in the territory of a foreign state. Because this is precisely what does not allow him to adequately protect state interests. It is proposed to supplement part one of article two with the corresponding words: “... does not have property registered in the territory of a foreign state,” said Kurinny.
Pavel Krasheninnikov, a member of United Russia and head of the Duma Committee on State Construction and Legislation, did not agree with this. In his opinion, this norm could hit senators and deputies who have relatives and real estate in the CIS countries:
“We believe that if there is real estate, it should be declared. If it is not declared, then different legislation will apply. If this suddenly comes to light, then neither the deputy nor the senator will be able to continue their work, they will resign - this is in the law.
Accordingly, if we are talking about some other points, then last time we once again said that we should not completely destroy ties with the CIS. We even have examples in our hall where relatives, parents or brothers and sisters live who own such real estate. Plus, we can also say that such people in the future - we are blocking their opportunities... Therefore, of course, we are against it,” Krasheninnikov explained somewhat chaotically.
Kurinny considered that we are talking about property not only in the CIS countries, but also in the West, and that this property could serve as a “reserve airfield” for politicians fleeing Russia:
“It is proposed that when conferring or preparing to confer powers on a new member of the Federation Council, his ownership of foreign real estate should be terminated. An absolutely understandable, normal question. We believe that for now a person has an “alternate airfield”, and not necessarily in the CIS countries - in Italy they have it, in Spain they have it, some in America have it. Now, as long as they have apartments, hotels, dachas and so on, they will never be true patriots of our Motherland. Because at any moment they will get up and go there. And with secrets, and with money, and with everything else. Therefore, until we cut these chains, we will not get any patriots in power, in this case in the Federation Council.”
