A media outlet will be considered a foreign agent if it is found to receive funding from abroad. A foreign agent media outlet will be required to register with the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation and label its materials accordingly.
“An unfounded decision was made regarding our media in the United States, which cannot leave us indifferent. We agreed that we will take absolutely mirror measures that will make it possible to classify foreign media as foreign agents. This cannot be done to our media,” said Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin.
According to him, 1853 people and 400 non-profit organizations are recognized as foreign agents in the United States, and 88 non-profit organizations in Russia.
Vice Speaker Pyotr Tolstoy noted that the adoption of the amendments was a forced decision.
“It will not affect freedom of speech in our country. We are talking about the opportunity for the executive branch to take mirror measures in relation to those countries where freedom of action, the words of Russian journalists, is infringed,” Tolstoy said.
