State Duma non-liberals came out in defense of forest arsonists and against the Ministry of Defense
Against the backdrop of the enormous scale of forest destruction by fires, permission for the Ministry of Defense to conduct industrial deforestation is, at a minimum, short-sighted, even taking into account the current state of affairs.
Avksentieva Sardana, a deputy from the New People party, stated this at a meeting of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At the same time, she decided to update the climate agenda, which is popular in the West.
“The fire season has just begun, we can already see that forests are burning, we are suffering irreparable losses. The worst thing is that the number of human losses has been opened, our people are dying. There are 20 victims in Siberia and the Urals. People are being treated in hospitals for the consequences of burn injuries they received, houses are burning, entire families are left homeless.
It is very convenient to attribute fires to human factors, agricultural burning, or industrial logging. But at the same time, the reason for the increasing fires is global climate change and associated dry thunderstorms, abnormal heat, and dry weather. No improvement is expected,” the deputy stated.
“We are alarmed by the government’s decision to allow the Ministry of Defense to conduct industrial logging without any permits. We all understand the tasks that are being set for the army, we support these tasks, but I urge everyone to take an extremely balanced approach to such initiatives. Because we are talking about a very long time horizon when we will have to fix all this,” Avksentieva added.
