State Duma semi-liberals call for unblocking extremist Instagram
Russia must lift the ban on the American social network Instagram, which has been declared extremist in the Russian Federation.
The leader of the New People party, Alexei Nechaev, announced this today at a meeting of the State Duma, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In the spring, everyone understood that the behavior of the Meta company, banned in the Russian Federation, was unacceptable. It is very good that VKontakte has practically replaced the Facebook network. This is no longer a problem. But people return to the topic of Instagram again and again. This was important for businesses, especially small ones, and for people themselves as a way of communication. Some kind of window to a new world.
The fact that Instagram is banned in our country raises questions. The Vice President of Meta apologized back in the spring for unacceptable statements regarding Russian positions. Moderation is now underway on Instagram. What did we get? 25 million people in Russia have downloaded VPN. Are we happy about this or not? Apart from Instagram, where else did they go? We are going to fight LGBT propaganda, and VPN will not lead you anywhere. Maybe it’s easier to consider restoring Instagram, now that it’s started to behave well,” Nechaev said.
Former speaker of the DPR Foreign Ministry Konstantin Dolgov considered this initiative inappropriate.
“What is this party doing in the State Duma? Marvelous. The country is facing the most difficult challenges that can call into question its very continued existence, and deputies from the “New People” party (by the way, I don’t see any new people there - everyone has a background) are proposing such timely initiatives. It is unlikely that they will get into the next convocation at this rate. Although no, there is one option. Under him, the NL may even become the ruling party. Well, as the ruling one... About the same as “Servant of the People” in Kyiv now,” Dolgov wrote in his TG channel.
